I would like to share with you the article that I read lately, related to infant's deaths in US.
I wrote many articles about this important topic and think that parents could learn from this one too...

“African American infant mortality is much higher than Caucasian infant mortality across the United States,” says Jenifer Cartland, PhD, director of the research center’s Child Health Data Lab. “In Cook County, IL. sleep-related death is responsible for 20 percent of the African American infant mortality, but it might be prevented by assuring that all infants have a safe place to sleep and that parents are well educated about safe sleep practices.”

Karen Sheehan, MD, MPH at Children’s Memorial says, “The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children should be put to sleep on their backs, in a safety-approved crib (or bassinet for younger children) with a firm mattress, and free from any objects (even blankets or toys) that could cover the baby’s face.”

Parents don’t always have all the knowledge or all the resources they need to put their infant to bed safely. Based on the research, 56.7 percent of the deaths occurred while the infant was sharing a bed with an adult and 30 percent occurred when the baby was sleeping alone, but not in a crib or bassinet (such as on a couch or a pillow on the floor). Few of these infants — only 7.5 percent – were found in safe sleep circumstances, that is, in a crib or bassinet with the baby on his or her back.

New Recall on Baby Slings

A U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warning this month advised parents to be cautious when using slings — particularly brands that hold babies in a chin-to-chest, curved position — with infants younger than 4 months. The agency is investigating about a dozen suffocation deaths associated with sling-style carriers, many involving premature babies or ones with breathing issues.
Like any baby product — cribs, strollers, car seats, playpens — slings come with inherent risks and require parents to be wary and use common sense. When a stroller is deemed unsafe — like one recalled last year because it posed a risk of cutting kids' fingers — we don't ban strollers altogether. We issue warnings and try to make them safer

Baby Slings...

If you are one of the parents that loves to use baby slings, maybe you see more benefits then hazards, you should read this article.
I know parents who think that baby slings are the best way to bond with their newborns and use them anyway.

A federal safety commission on Friday issued a warning for baby-carrying slings, blaming them for three infant deaths in 2009.

Some sling manufacturers, however, opposed the warning, saying it could hurt their business and argued the slings are safe if used properly.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said slings have been associated with at least 14 infant deaths over the last 20 years. Most of the babies who died were under four months old and had either a low birth weight, were born prematurely, or had breathing issues such as a cold, the commission reported.

Slings are made from cloth and wrap around a parent's body, allowing them to carry a baby close on the chest, back, or hip.

The commission said the slings pose a suffocation hazard. The fabric can block a baby's breathing, resulting in death within a minute, it reported. And if the sling keeps the baby in a curled position, the airway can be restricted, rendering the baby unable to cry while suffocation occurs, the commission said.

It recommended that parents and caregivers who use a sling make sure the baby's face is visible, the chin upright, and that the baby isn't pressed up against the body. Babies should be checked frequently, it added.

The commission said it is currently developing a safety standard for all slings.

How to keep your Baby safe in his Bassinet or Cradle

All parents want to create a cozy, safe, and secure bedroom for their newborn. Infant’s safety is number one concern for new parents when they bring new baby home.
Approximately one or two newborns out of every one thousand die in their sleep, for no apparent reason, and diagnosis is the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome- SIDS.

Always remember about safety, when leaving your baby alone for a nap or sleep:
- place your baby always face up for sleeping,
- never add more extra mattress padding,
- never cover the mattress with a plastic bag,
- never use pillows of any kind and size in the bassinet or co-sleeper,
- don’t use baby poppers (wedges), usually firm bolsters, some made in a triangular shape, these can be just as dangerous as pillows. Simply laying your baby on his back should be sufficient. Baby’s neck can be captured over the edge of the proper and block airways.
- don’t use any kinds of bed warmers, like electric blankets, heating pads or warm water bottles in baby’s bed. A baby’s skin is extremely sensitive to heat, and your child can be burned by temperatures that would seem comfortable to an adult.
Newborn’s main activity is napping and sleeping. From birth to 6 months old they sleep 10-18 hours each day. Creating a safe and cozy bedroom is so important.
- Crib or bassinet location is a very important part of the infant’s bedroom.
The center of the room is a safe crib spot, protecting baby from reaching out to pull anything down from walls, furniture, or windows.
Since you will be leaving your baby for a long time in the nursery, you’ll want her or him to be safe,
- keep wall hangings with ribbons or streamers out of reach of the crib. Blind cords can strangle babies in cribs,
- regularly check crib bars and hardware,
- purchase window locks or guards.
Position the baby in a corner of the crib or bassinet, head touching the bumper or soft padding to provide a feeling of security. Infants may feel overwhelmed and not secure in big, traditional cribs. Infants feel much better in smaller beds, like baby bassinets or co-sleepers. Both are recommended for newborns up to age of 6 months.
1. Co-sleepers or bedside sleepers are designed for newborns and nursing infants. They allow baby to sleep in his own protected, small area adjoining your bed. The sleeper fits flush against the side of your bed, at the same height as your mattress, with an open side next to your bed allowing easy access to the baby.
2. Bassinets and cradles are also small sleeping beds that offer a nest for newborn near the parent’s bed.
They present an alternative to putting your newborn into a large crib but are meant to use only in the first few months of baby’s life. You’ll have your infant close by for multiple nighttime feedings and diaper changes. All small babies also seem more at home in a confined space then in a large, airy crib. These wheeled baby beds take up little space and can be rolled easily from one room to another.

Basinets and Playpens regulations in Canada

I would like to share with some regulations that Canada is making regarding baby bassinets and playpens.

Health Canada is calling on the manufacturing industry to implement stricter safety standards when it comes to playpen accessories, after a number of infants suffered injuries and have even died while using the products.

In 1976, playpen regulation legislation was issued to ensure playpens sold in Canada met a certain standard of safety. However, those regulations do not cover accessories attached to playpens, such as change tables, bassinets, mobiles and canopies.

Health Canada's Consumer Product Safety Bureau received eight complaints related to playpen accessories between 1996 and 2009, including three deaths.

Some of the biggest problems with these types of accessories is the tendency for infants to become either trapped, or fall.

One Health Canada recommendation is that playpen makers, sellers, importers and advertisers meet the design, testing and labeling standards outlined by ASTM International, a voluntary international standards development organization.

Those standards include increased product testing to ensure infants do not become entrapped in playpen accessories.

Health Canada is also recommending bassinet accessories be tested for structural solidity, and bassinet mattress supports be at least 230 mm lower than the highest surface of the lowest stationary side of the playpen to which it is attached.

PLastic - Convenience or Danger...

Do you know about plastics? Are you aware of the basic components that your baby's sippy cup is made of? Do you read before you hand it to your child?

Some petroleum-based plastics leach harmful chemical into foods and drinks, especially when plastic comes in contact with oily or fatty foods, during heating and microwaving and when exposed to excessive moisture.

It is important to make wise choices.

Choose smart plastics (see icons below) and avoid putting them in the microwave (where they can release dangerous chemicals when heated) or the dishwasher (where they can degrade in the heat and excessive moisture).

Safer Choices:

Select safe plastics that use polyethylene (#1, #2, and #4) and polypropylene (#5), which require the use of less toxic additives. They also are non-chlorinated.

Avoid:

Avoid choosing products that use polyvinyl chloride (#3), polystyrene (#6), and polycarbonate (#7) which often are found in baby bottles or sippy cups.

Safety Checklist

Be aware of plastic products in your child’s surroundings – squeeze toys, rattles, bath toys, cribs, teethers, pacifiers, high chairs, sippy cups, and baby bottles
Avoid PVC products, like vinyl chew toys, which are identified with a “V” or “3.” If you can’t eliminate them all, then make sure they are cleaned regularly.
Opt for toys and books made with natural wood, paper, cloth, or metal.
Opt for plastic alternatives – glass, ceramic that’s lead-free, and stainless steel -- whenever possible.
Use glass or ceramic containers to microwave food and beverages.
Be cautious of cling wraps, especially for microwave use. Wrap foods in butcher paper, waxed paper, or paper towels. Or store food in glass or ceramic.
Avoid using plastics that aren’t identified on the packaging.
Look for products that state “no phthalates” or “no bisphenol A (BPA).”
Wash plastic containers by hand with a mild soap.

How to prevent Flat Head Syndrome

Lately I read a very interesting article about a flat head syndrome and I would like to share it with you:
"In a new study, infants averaging six months of age who exhibited positional plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome) had lower scores than typical infants in observational tests used to evaluate cognitive and motor development. Positional or deformational plagiocephaly may occur when external forces shape an infant's skull while it is still soft and malleable, such as extended time spent lying on a hard surface or in one position. This is the first controlled study to suggest that babies who have flattened areas on the back of their heads during the first year of life may be at risk for developmental delay. Led by clinical psychologist Matthew L. Speltz, PhD, from Seattle Children's Research Institute, these findings suggest that babies with plagiocephaly should be screened early in life for possible motor and cognitive delays. "Case-Control Study of Neurodevelopment in Deformational Plagiocephaly" published online on February 15 in Pediatrics.
"Statistically, there has been a dramatic rise in the diagnosis of positional plagiocephaly since the 1990's. This may be a result of multiple factors, including increased awareness and babies spending more time on their backs in strollers, car seats, infant seats, cribs and sleeping on their backs. This time period also coincides with the national Back-to-Sleep campaign designed to help protect babies against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), although it should be noted that a direct correlation with flat head syndrome hasn't been scientifically established," added Speltz. "For every ten babies, one or two may have at least mild plagiocephaly. Many parents and physicians have dismissed it as a cosmetic issue or one that babies will grow out of as they develop, but our study indicates that we should look deeper."

New study possibly links cognitive and motor delays with 'flat head syndrome' in young babies

TIPS FOR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS:

Flat spots in a young baby's head can be quite common, and by itself they are not a cause for alarm. Ask your baby's doctor about it.
If your baby is diagnosed with plagiocephaly, ask the doctor to screen for developmental delays in both motor and cognitive skills. Talk about the results.
Remember that babies develop at different times, and at different rates. What is "normal" for your baby may be ahead of or behind what is normal for another baby. Babies who start out slower often catch up later.
Always place babies to sleep on their backs: this remains the safest way to sleep. Place your baby's head at one end of the crib and switch to the other end the next night.
Encourage active "tummy time" when babies are awake: find ways to for baby to engage, play and move while on their tummy, several times each day. Watch your baby during tummy time.
Choose different positions and ways for babies to play and be held: variety of stimulation is important. Switch the arm you use to cradle your baby each feeding session; right one time, left the next.
Use strollers, car seats, infant seats, bassinets, cribs and play pens when necessary, but remember that babies need frequent lap time, cuddling, active play times and chances to move that aren't limited to being in stationary positions.
Develop motor skills: play with babies to get them moving. Encourage crawling, rolling, reaching, pushing, pulling, holding, grasping.
Develop cognitive skills: play with babies to get them thinking and talking. Encourage interactions with their environment, looking, listening, imitating, babbling, singing, talking, reading.

4 Unsafe Baby Products to Avoid

New parents are quick to jump on any product they think will make life more comfortable for their baby—and easier for themselves.
I remember when I was shopping for my new baby, I knew its not going to be easy, because I wanted to get the best and the safest products on earth. It is hard especially for new, first time parents with no experience at all.
I did some research and want to share it with you.
Some items present safety risks I don't believe are worth taking. Here are four that I think you should skip:

Baby bath seat
Each year, an average of 10 babies drown while using baby bath seats. Nearly all of those deaths occurred when a parent or caregiver left the baby unattended momentarily. The problem is that these seats, intended to make it easier to hold the baby in the bathtub, can give parents a false sense of security. It’s better to use an infant bathtub for bathing and never, even for a second, leave the baby beyond arm’s reach.

Sleep positioners
These devices are intended to keep infants on their back in a secure sleeping position. But the youngest infants, for whom these are designed, are not able to roll over from their backs on their own, which makes this product unnecessary. The soft foam in the sleep positioners can pose a suffocation hazard and our medical experts don’t recommend them.

Crib bumper pads
Designed to prevent bumps and bruises, crib bumpers can create their own hazards. One study found 27 cases of infant death involving bumper pads or similarly padded bassinets. Most of the deaths occurred when the infant became wedged between the bumper and another object or when the infant’s face was against the bumper.

And since bumper pads cannot be safety secured to cribs with solid end panels and should not be used with toddlers who can stand, we think it’s best to avoid them altogether.

Sling carriers
Over the past five years, at least four babies died and there have been many reports of serious injury associated with the use of sling-type carriers. The incidents include skull fractures, head injuries, contusions and abrasions. Most occurred when the child fell out of the sling. As slings grow in popularity, so do the number of serious injuries. No safety standards exist for slings. We think you should skip the sling and opt for other types of infant carriers, which have safer track records. (Image note: The CPSC recalled 100,000 Infantino slings in 2007.)

New Rules That You Want to Know When Shopping for a Baby Stroller, Bassinet, and more...

The government is requiring the manufacturers of products for infants and toddlers to create programs for keeping in touch with people who own cribs, strollers, changing tables and other items.

Under the new rule, manufacturers will have to provide postage-paid registration forms with every infant and toddler product and then keep records of those who register. Each product will also have to feature in a permanent way the manufacturer's name and contact information, along with the product's model name, number and date of manufacture.

The requirements will improve the speed of distributing information about product recalls, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday. Its officials unanimously approved the new rule last week.

The requirements apply to 18 categories of products: full-size cribs and nonfull-size cribs; toddler beds; high chairs, booster chairs, and hook-on chairs; bath seats; gates and other enclosures for confining a child; play yards; stationary activity centers; infant carriers; strollers; walkers; swings; bassinets and cradles; children's folding chairs; changing tables; infant bouncers; infant bathtubs; portable toddler bed rails; and infant slings.

Child's Safety in a Baby Crib or Bassinet

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. – Earlier this month, ASTM International Committee F15 on Consumer Products approved a revised version of F1169, Specification for Full-Size Baby Crib. The standard is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee F15.18 on Cribs, Toddler Beds, Play Yards, Bassinets, Cradles and Changing Tables.

The most significant change to F1169 is the removal of provisions for drop sides in cribs from the standard. Subcommittee F15.18 investigated incidents provided by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, many of which involved hardware failure related to misassembly and subsequent reassembly of a crib. After extensive testing and exploration of different design approaches to eliminating these hazards, the ASTM subcommittee approved the recent revisions that now preclude cribs with a functional drop side and related hardware assemblies from complying with the ASTM standard.

Further, this revision to F1169 also contains new performance tests for crib assemblies to assure the structural integrity of crib slats.

Crib Safety Tips -2

Remove the bottle. As your child gets older you may feel tempted to let him fall asleep with a bottle or sippy cup. Don't do this! Bottle nipples suffer from wear and tear over time and a small piece can break off and get caught in a baby's throat. Sleeping with a bottle or cup can also cause tooth decay and lead to ear infections.
Use the proper sheets. Use ones made to fit the mattress in your crib, bassinet or play yard. If a sheet isn't the correct fit, your baby may pull it up and become entangled.
Skip the crib gym. The safest crib is one that is free of gyms and other toys that stretch across the crib using strings, cords or ribbons.
Skip the bumpers, too. Crib bumpers are cute, but it's best not to use them. They need to be tied down with string, which is a potential hazard if not properly secured.
Don't use a sleep positioner. Those wedge-shaped pieces of foam are designed to help babies sleep on their back. But the American Academy of Pediatrics says that none of these devices have been tested sufficiently to show that they are effective or safe.
Always put your baby to sleep on his back, not his stomach, to minimize the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and re breathing, a sometimes fatal circumstance that can occur when a baby is sleeping on his stomach or trapped in soft bedding. As a result the child "rebreathes" his own carbon dioxide rather than breathing in oxygen-rich fresh air. The lack of oxygen can cause death.
Crib mobiles are for looking at, not for touching. They often have string or small attached pieces. Make sure your little one cannot reach the mobile so he can't become entangled or pull anything off. When he is able to push himself up on his hands and knees, the mobile should be removed from the crib.

Bassinet and Crib Safety Tips -1

Never purchase an antique or used crib or bassinet. It may be missing hardware that prevents it from collapsing or failing in some other way. Some older cribs have cutouts in the headboard or footboard. Whether old or new, your crib shouldn't have any cutouts or openings that could entrap your child's head, neck, arms, or legs.
Check the condition of the crib's paint. If your crib is painted, make sure the paint isn't chipped or peeling. This is especially important with older cribs that may have been coated with paint that contains lead—another reason not to use old cribs.
Check the crib for splinters. If you use an older crib, be sure to check it over thoroughly for cracks, splinters and rough edges, which could harm your baby.
Check slat spacing. The slats in a crib or bassinet should be no farther apart than 2 3/8 inches. If you can fit a can of soda through them, the opening is too large.
Check mattress supports. Make sure that the system that supports the crib mattress isn't bent, broken or coming apart.
Make sure the mattress fits. Put your baby to sleep on her back on a firm mattress that fits tightly into the crib. There shouldn't be any cracks or openings between the crib and the mattress because a baby can get trapped in the smallest of spaces.
Use safe sleepwear. Infant sleepwear should fit snuggly and be made of flame-resistant fabric. There should be no drawstrings, ribbons or anything else that might catch on something. Buttons and snaps should be firmly attached to avoid becoming a choking hazard.

INFANT CAR SEAT CARRIERS - NEW RECALL

A baby product manufacturer recalled on Friday about 447,000 of its infant car seat carriers, including some branded with Eddie Bauer and Disney logos, after dozens of reports of the carrier's handle coming loose.

There have been at least three injuries to babies, including bumps, bruises and a head injury. Dorel Juvenile Group Inc., of Columbus, Ind., received 77 reports of the child restraint handle fully or partially coming off the products.

In announcing the recall, the government said consumers should immediately stop using the seat's carrying handle. The bolts that attach the handle to the seat can loosen, causing the handle to possibly separate and creating a fall hazard for babies.

The recall involves Safety 1st, Cosco, Eddie Bauer and Disney branded infant car seat carriers with certain model numbers. They were sold at department and children's product stores nationwide from January 2008 through this month.

The recall was announced on Friday by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Dorel Juvenile Group.

The traffic safety agency said consumers should not use the handle until a repair kit has been installed. The repair kit includes new screws that consumers can attach to the seat carriers. When the recall announcements are made for cribs it consistently recommends that owners stop using them"immediately" and contact the manufacturer, which often supplies repair kits. But many parents complain that those fix-it kits sometimes take too long to arrive.

So where should your baby sleep while the repair kit is slowly making its way to your mailbox? Here are some suggestions and tips for creating a safe sleeping environment for your baby:

your crib has been recalled, contact the manufacturer as soon as possible by calling the phone number or visiting the Web site listed on the recall notice. The sooner you get your name on the list, the sooner you’ll receive the repair kit.
If you can’t get quick action from the manufacturer, consider going back to the retailer that sold you the crib. If you have your original receipt, all the better.
If your recalled crib is in perfect working order, we think you could continue to use it until your repair kit arrives. But first make sure that all the hardware is intact and tight, and stop using the drop side.
If you have a play yard, put your baby to sleep in that. But be careful—there have also been a slew of play-yard recalls.
Don’t be tempted to repair a broken crib with your own hardware; do-it-yourself fixes may be just as unsafe as the recalled crib.
Don’t share your adult bed with a sleeping infant. Infants are up to 40 times more likely to suffocate in an adult bed than in a crib.
With any crib, it’s important to make sure that there is no missing or loose hardware and to check it regularly. A bare crib is a safe crib, so skip the comforters, pillows, bumper pads and stuffed animals since they can pose suffocation hazards.

New Recall in the Baby Industry!

Two infant deaths have led to the recall of about 24,000 Amby Baby Motion Beds - hammock-like beds marketed to parents of fussy babies with colic or reflux.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday, Dec 8, 2009, that the side-to-side shifting or tilting of the hammock can cause an infant to roll and become trapped or wedged against the hammock’s fabric or mattress pad, posing a suffocation risk to babies.

Two infants suffocated this summer – a 4-month-old in Georgia and a 5-month-old in Oregon

The beds, made by Amby Baby USA of Minneapolis, look somewhat like a baby swing, but have mesh and fabric sides, resembling a hammock. The bed, or hammock, hangs from a spring and every time the baby moves or stirs in his sleep, the bed gently moves up and down, back and forth, or side to side. The idea is to mimic the motion of a baby in the womb.

The bed is recommended by the company for babies ranging from newborn to 9 months old. Amby did not immediately respond to calls and e-mails from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Safety advocates say babies are safest in cribs or bassinets with a firm bottom support and no soft bedding, gaps, or other possible points where they could become trapped or entangled.

CPSC says there is only one model of the Amby hammock available. It has a label sewn onto it that says, “Amby – Babies Love It, Naturally.” The beds were sold online, through Ambybaby.com and other Internet retailers dating back to 2003. They cost about $250.

Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the motion beds and find a safe place for baby to sleep.

On its Web site, Amby says it plans to offer a free repair kit as soon as possible, “but not earlier than January 2010.”

Hotel Cribs and Play Yards - Traveling Tips for Families with Babies

Now, in holiday season, traveling with babies doesn't have to give you a headache.
Just remember about safety of you children and bring what they need the most. I think about a traveling bed, a place for your baby to sleep. If you are planning to visit relatives or stay at the hotel, remember about the safe bed, which can be a portable play yard, packnplay. These models are easy to use, convenient, portable, and comfortable for kids.
When you're traveling with an infant, a hotel crib or play yard can be a safe haven for your baby. But if you don't know how old the crib or play yard is, it could be outdated and not up to today's safety standards.

To play it safe, you may want to take your play yard from home when you're traveling. When your baby sleeps in a play yard at night, place the play yard next to your bed, within arm's reach. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that your baby sleep in the same room with you (but not the same bed) until he is at least 6 months old, whether you're at home or on the road.

Because the bassinet feature in play yards can only be used for sleeping for babies up to 15 pounds, you'll need to go to plan B after that. One option: Put your baby to sleep on the floor of your play yard. It's close to the ground and uses the same mattress/floor pad as the bassinet.

If you can't or don't want to travel with a play yard, use the hotel's crib or play yard, but be sure to do your own assessment. For hotel cribs, check to make sure that the mattress is firm and tight-fitting. You shouldn't be able to fit two fingers between the edge of the mattress and the crib side. You shouldn't be able to fit a soda can between the slats. There also shouldn't be any missing parts, which can make the crib unstable or create dangerous gaps. There should be no protruding parts, screws, or bolts, or corner posts more than 1/16 inch or less than 16 inches high (anything in between can catch clothing, posing a strangulation hazard) or cutouts in the head or foot board, which can trap an infant's head or limbs. (Do the same tests at home and at Grandma's house.) Ask for another crib if the one you're offered doesn't pass muster.

If all a hotel has to offer is a play yard, check it out. (These criteria also apply to your baby's play yard at home.) It should have mesh panels, which allow airflow, but a weave that's small (less than ¼-inch openings.) Ask for another if the mesh is larger or has any tears, holes, or loose threads, or if the mesh is not secured all around to the top rails and the floor, or the top rail cover has tears or holes. The sides should lock securely (press on them to be sure), and the play yard should include a snug, tight-fitting mattress/floor pad. Use only the mattress or pad provided by the manufacturer. Don't add a second mattress, pillow, comforter, or other soft bedding to either a hotel crib or play yard. Consider bringing a crib or play yard sheet from home in case you need it.

After the biggest baby crib recall this week, there is a lot of questions that parents can ask, how to keep their babies safe in cribs, bassinets, co-sleepers, and other crib alternatives.
I wrote earlier a lot posts about crib and bassinet safety, but now the topic is really hot!
Now I wish to share with you an article I like and that could be beneficial for all parents.

"A nationwide crib recall has gained a lot of attention, but parents need to check for other hazards as small children sleep, according to the Springfield-Greene County Health Department.

“In the last two years, we have had nine infants in Greene County die as a result of unsafe sleep environments,” said Pam Bryant, administrator of maternal, child and family health, in a news release. “It’s vital to remind parents not to place infants on pallets, in adult beds or in other unsafe sleeping environments.”

The safest place for a baby to sleep is in a crib that meets current safety standards. The mattress should be firm, covered only with a tight-fitting crib sheet, and should fit snugly in the crib. Parents should not place anything soft, fluffy or loose in the crib with an infant. This includes blankets, quilts, pillows, bumpers, stuffed animals or other soft objects.

“Play yards, bassinets and cradles are a safe alternative for younger babies,” Bryant said. “Be sure to follow all size and weight restrictions for the product you use and do not add any extra padding or soft bedding.”

It is not safe to place babies in adult beds or to fall asleep with them while sitting on a couch or in an armchair. Babies need a separate sleeping space to protect them from SIDS, suffocation and accidents. Parents can place the baby’s bed next to their bed to allow closer supervision of the baby.

Baby Crib Recall

The law requires the Consumer Product Safety Commission to issue mandatory safety standards for cribs and bassinets. The CPSC is currently working on establishing those standards. Any space where infants and toddlers spend hours every day, by themselves, must be a safe space. I feel so sorry for the families whose children have been injured or killed by dangerous cribs. Such deaths are entirely preventable and absolutely inexcusable.

According to a CPSC press release, “CPSC, Health Canada, and Stork Craft are aware of 110 incidents of drop-side detachment; 67 incidents occurred in the United States and 43 in Canada. The incidents include 15 entrapments; 12 in the U.S. and three in Canada. Four of the entrapments resulted in suffocation: a 7-month-old in Gouverneur, N.Y.; a 7-month-old in New Iberia, La.; a 6-month-old in Summersville, W.Va.; and a 9-month-old in Bronx, N.Y. Included in these incidents are 20 falls from cribs; 12 in the U.S. and eight in Canada. Fall injuries ranged from concussion to bumps and bruises. The cribs involved in these incidents had plastic drop-side hardware that had broken, missing, or deformed claws, connectors, tracks, or flexible tab stops; loose or missing metal spring clips; stripped screws; and/or drop-sides installed upside-down.”

Stork Craft Baby Cribs Recalled after Four Infants Suffocated

Just two weeks after Maclaren recalled more than 1 million strollers, another baby product line is recalling its products in what is being called the biggest crib recall in U.S. history.

Our colleagues at Charm City Moms break down the specifics: More than 2.1 million drop-side cribs made by Stork Craft Manufacturing are being recalled after reports that four infants suffocated.

The problem is with the crib hardware, the Associated Press reports. The drop-side can detach, creating a space between the side and the mattress, where a baby can become trapped. Scary stuff.

Baby's Crib Safety Recall

According to CBS, a baby's crib safety recall, possibly the biggest in American history, is imminent. There's no word yet on any particular brands or models affected by the recall, but rumor has it the crib recall will involve cribs with drop-down sides.

Cribs with sides that slide downward have been a favorite target of child safety expects recently, and it's no mystery why. In July 2009, Simplicity Drop Side Cribs were recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission due to the risk of suffocation. Just one month earlier in June, LaJobi recalled two crib models for the same reason. And in October 2008, Delta Enterprise recalled nearly a million cribs due to faulty safety pegs making the drop down sides a strangulation hazard.

It's always recalls of products that involve child safety - bassinets, cribs, strollers, minivans - that get the most press, and that's understandable.

Dangerous Infantino Baby Slings

Baby slings are one of the products that are not recommended for babies. In May baby in Oregon died in the baby sling while his mother was walking with him around.
There were at least 7 babies that get suffocated in baby slings over last 11 years. Many injuries were reported, broken bones, serious bruises, and skull fractures over the same period of time.
Baby carriers are more recommended for infants and newborns then baby slings. Many mothers think that baby slings help them to bond with their newborns, it is right thinking but danger of baby's death will get over.
I would not use any of the baby slings for my child. I wonder what do you think about slings?

I agree with that statement, baby bassinet, or another kind of co-sleeper or cradle are very important parts of newborn's bedroom. They are convenient for parents, you can easily move bassinets around your house from room to room depending on your needs. Also they can be used as a portable baby's beds to make traveling with the baby easier. Another very important benefit is bonding with the newborn and building necessary, positive emotional relationship between infant and new parents. Reducing SIDS is the next benefit that all new parents have on their minds when they bring newborns home. Co-sleeping with the infant is a natural way to bond and using appropriate, safe accessories is the way to do that. - 7 to 9 years old: 9 to 12 hours.
Sleep is important to child's health and well-being. Lack of sleep can disturb child's growth and development. Beyond simply affecting children's moods, behaviors, and academic performances, insufficient sleep has also been associated with lower social skills, learning disabilities, and ADHD.

Baby's bed, bassinet or crib plays significant role in infant's development, that's why appropriate accessories are important to stimulate that growth.

“Winnie the Pooh” baby bassinet RECALL

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a warning about the bassinets after another child strangled to death in September 2007. The lawsuit alleges that Wal-Mart did not recall the bassinets until a year later, on August 27, 2008.

Simplicity, Inc., formerly of Reading, Pennsylvania, had all of their assets sold at public auction to SFCA, Inc. in April 2008. After SFCA, Inc. failed to cooperate with the CPSC, the federal safety regulators issued a statement on their own in August 2008, urging parents to stop using the bassinets. Shortly thereafter, several major retailers, including Wal-Mart, Target, J.C. Penny, Kmart, Toys “R” Us and Big Lots!, agreed to issue a Simplicity bassinet recall and offer refunds or store credits to consumers who purchased the product at their store.

Since Simplicity ceased operations, the CPSC has continued to issue recalls for unsafe baby products the company manufactured, including more than 900,000 bassinets in August 2008, 600,000 Simplicity drop side cribs in September 2008 and 200,000 portable play yards recalled in January 2009.

What is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome?

Sudden infant death syndrome (or SIDS) occurs when a baby under 12 months old dies suddenly for no apparent reason. When doctors investigate the death (do an autopsy), they can't find anything that might have been the cause.

Sudden infant death syndrome happens without any warning when the baby is thought to be sleeping. It can occur when the baby is in a crib. But babies can also die when they're sleeping somewhere else, such as in a stroller or their parent's arms.

RISK FACTORS FOR SIDS:

They are placed to sleep on their front (this is the most important factor)
Their mother or another family member smokes.

Risk factors make SIDS more likely. But it's important to realize that having a risk factor doesn't mean SIDS will happen. We know only that babies who die of SIDS are more likely to have been exposed to these risks.

Avoiding these risk factors can help make SIDS less likely.
Co-sleeping with your newborn or baby may put you in more control over infant's sleep.
Co-sleeping is recommended for a number of benefits and reducing SIDS IS ONE OF THEM.
You can use a baby bassinet or typical c0-sleeper and move around the house, and that makes co-sleeping easier.
